Urbana Post 71 plays all out against hard-hitting teams from Marysville, OH and Bowling Green, KY

On Friday Urbana opened against the Ohio state champs by scoring 2 runs in the top of the first. Adam Kirby was hit in the head by a pitch to get on base and was sent home on Nick Krisman's long double to the left center wall. Ryne Brownfield scored Krisman on the first of two long doubles he hit during the game. Ohio answered with 4 runs in the bottom of the first on 5 hits, an error, and a 1st and 3rd situation mismanaged by Urbana. Urbana allowed another 3 runs in the second and 1 in the third before solidifying their defensive play and holding Ohio scoreless for the remainder. Urbana ended the game for Ohio when Brownfield at shortstop caught a line drive and threw over to Spencer McNeil at first for a double play. Urbana then went into the top of the 7th needing a seven run rally. McNeil singled and Zak Sutton bunted for an infield hit, but a fly out and a double play ended the game. Urbana finshed the game with 2 runs on 6 hits: Zak Sutton, single; Nick Krisman, double; Ryne Brownfield, two doubles; Theo Facer, single; Spencer McNeil, single. Greg Johnson pitched to Adam Kirby, and Kirby Johnson was DH.

On Saturday, Urbana faced the state champions from Kentucky. Kentucky started the game as visitors with 1 run on 3 hits that went unanswered by Urbana in the bottom of the inning. Urbana scored 1 run in the second, 3 runs in the fourth, and 1 in the fifth. Urbana let up 5 runs in second but held the hard-hitting Kentucky team scoreless in the third, ending that inning with a 5-6-3 double play by Theo Facer, Ryne Brownfield, and Nick Krisman. Krisman also turned an unassisted double play to end the top of the fourth. The seventh inning started with Kentucky at bat ahead 10-5. Urbana's defense shut them down. Urbana rallied in the bottom of the seventh beginning with a single by Jon Wooten followed by a fielder's choice by Josh Daley. Daley reached second on a single by the DH, Josh Hall. With runners at first and second, Zak Sutton hit a double driving in 2. Matt Rosenberger singled on a balk to put runners at 1st and 3rd. The inning ended there, unfortunately, on a double play with a final score of 10-7. Matt Gordon started the game and after pitching 3 and 1/3 innings was relieved by Cody Alexander who finished the game throwing to Spencer McNeil.

Urbana 4, Indiana 7

Urbana Post 71 played the Indiana champion team from Crown Point, Post 20 this morning at Beavers Field in Lancaster, OH. Urbana led the game 4-2 in the sixth when they let up 5 runs to put Indiana ahead. Urbana finished with 4 runs, 9 hits and 0 errors. Indiana finished with 7 runs, 6 hits and 0 errors. Adam Kirby of Urbana had 3 hits, and players with one hit each were Zack Sutton, Matt Rosenberger, Nick Krisman, Theo Facer, Spencer McNeil, and Kirby Johnson. Nick Krisman pitched to Spencer McNeil.

State tourney pics

National competition

The team is now on their way to Lancaster, Ohio for the Great Lakes Regional Tournament after finishing second in the State of Illinois on Monday in Trenton. Illinois has more than 80 junior level teams, so the top two teams were invited to the regional along with the hosting team and state champions from Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Indiana. Urbana Post 71 is scheduled to play pool games as follows:

10 am Thursday, 7/28 vs. Indiana
7 pm Friday, 7/29 vs. Ohio
1 pm Saturday, 7/30 vs. Kentucky

The top two teams from each pool of four will face off on Sunday, 7/31. Game times will be 10 am, 1 pm, and 4 pm.
